![]() Sadly PowerShell is only returning the command that caused the problem in the extended error information, not the path it actually couldn't find. Looking further, it's possible the error really is missing files (resulting in a path failure), given the brief description of 8007000003 being caused by missing files in this KB article: That to the actual meaning of the error code. If some of them explained why it failed, it might be possible to generalise One of the major problems is that the Windows Update results only go into the most surface of details on how to fix the issue, they don't specify what the problem is in the first place. Converting the error code to hex results in 4C5C573, I also can't find this anywhere. Showing up across two unrelated programs, this error code clearly has a generic meaning in Microsoft-land, but I'm unable to find this generic meaning anywhere. Trying to google search it just results in a lot of irrelevant spam about an unrelated problem with Windows Update, whereas here I'm working with PowerShell and Group Policy. The error code was 80070003, and none of the above lists contain a description of it. I received an exception trying to import a GPO through PowerShell, A nonsensical error about not being able to find a path that clearly exists. I'm looking for general answers (error code lists or a function to return the meaning of error codes) even though a specific problem prompted this, I'll give the problem for context: In the 'custom string' case, knowing the meaning of the actual error code can be very useful. ![]() Other times, it has a custom string defined inside the application to try and 'specify' or 'friendly-fi' the problem, plus the actual error code it received when it tried to run its own operation. ![]() Looking up the error value in a list, you'll just see the same string again. This isn't always true - sometimes the failing application just gives you an error value plus the error string associated with that value in Windows. Something more specific and valuable like 'Access Denied' (couldn't find the path due to lacking read permissions, perhaps). (Exception from HRESULT: 0x12345678)" when you actually look up the error value it's I'm trying to find out the normal meaning of an error code, It seems sometimes when you get an error with a string like 'The system cannot find the path specified. ![]() Also, in case anyone has any better ideas. Author's note - I wound up solving this problem myself, I'll post the question anyway and answer it myself since it was a rather frustrating problem while I had it. ![]()
